Standard Six: External Development Leadership
A school executive will design structures and processes that result in community engagement, support, and ownership. Acknowledging that schools no longer reflect but in fact build community, the leader proactively creates with staff opportunities for parents, community and business representatives to participate as “stockholders” in the school such that continued investments of resources and good will are not left to chance.
6A. Parent and Community Involvement and Outreach
The school executive designs structures and processes which result in parent and community engagement, support and ownership for the school.
Academic Awards Night
|
Throughout my residency, Pattillo sought ways to increase parent and community engagement. One event we held was an Academic Awards night banquet to highlight student achievement after the first grading quarter. I was the administrative team representative for the evening as both my mentor principal and assistant principal had prior engagements. This event afforded me the opportunity to interact with stakeholders and acknowledge their critical role and shared responsibility for our school's and students' success. |
Blue Ribbon Commission on Educational Equity
Last year, Edgecombe County Public Schools established the Blue Ribbon Commission to “define the future we imagine for our students and learn about opportunities and challenges we face in pursuit of that vision.” It is comprised of is a diverse group of Edgecombe County stakeholders tasked with collaborating with the broader community to make informed recommendations to the Edgecombe County Board of Education and Central Services staff.
I attended the commission's first town hall meeting of the school year. The purpose of this town hall gathering was to discuss “What is a purposeful life?” The panelist spoke of empowering students to discover their purpose and function in life instead of us dictating the path they take. It was an insightful experience allowed me to engage in meaningful discussions on the future of education that is possible for our students and how we can achieve it.

Parent/Guardian Contacts
|
Part of our discipline policy is to contact parents when a student is involved in a disciplinary incident and record it in our Administrative Contact Log. Throughout the course of my residency, I made several parent/guardian contacts to make them aware of the situation as well as any consequence received. My goal was to be a fair disciplinarian and student advocate, so I ensured that I communicated our school's desire to work with the parent/guardian to ensure their child's success.

6B. Federal, State, and District Mandates
The school executive designs protocols and processes in order to comply with federal, state, and district mandates.
Case21 & Lockdown Procedures
This year, our district started using Case21 for benchmark assessments. I was able to lead department PLCs in which I introduced our teachers to an overview of Case21 and how to navigate the program and access reports. We also reviewed lockdown procedures and requirements for an upcoming drill to be in compliance with federal, state, and district guidelines.
One of my teachers had a question regarding specifics of lockdown protocol because there seemed to be a change from what had been shared previous years. After investigating the matter, I was able to follow-up with staff and explain what should be done.

Opportunity Culture Planning
|
Opportunity Culture is a model that seeks to extend excellent teaching consistently to close student achievement gaps. This is a requirement for all schools within our district. I served on our school's Opportunity Culture design team which was responsible for planning and preparing for the implementation of this initiative. During our initial meeting, we discussed our ideal possible future, analyzed student achievement and teacher data, prioritized area of needs, and developed high-leverage goals for solutions. |
